Being Sick in College

Nothing is worse than being sick in college. Most of us have crazy schedules that change daily. On my worst days, I go from 9:30 am until 1 am the next day. I have been fortunate to not get severely sick at college but for the last week I have had a head cold that can only be described as annoying. It started with sneezing around 20 times a day, developed into a headache, then the next morning I woke up with a full blown cold. At home, you can tell your mom you are sick and she will grab you medicine. I was not prepared by first time getting sick at school. Here are some tips when dealing with sickness at school.
  1. Clean your room. This was huge for me when I lived in the dorms. The first word of students getting sick I had a rule of no people in our rooms. It seems harsh but getting sick at school is rough. I can recall disinfecting our door handles and room nightly to avoid what is commonly called the Ada Plague.
  2. Know your sickness. 99% of the time when I get sick it is the same symptoms (hurting ears, sore throat, headaches, and lack of sleep). I now keep medicine ready to go for this.
  3. If it is bad go to the health center. Especially if you are in the dorms because everyone else can get it. If you have a fever or throwing up get help right away.
  4. Skip a class if you need it. The first few days are the worst but try to not make a habit of missing class. I try to never skip class, but this last week I did miss one class.
  5. Do as I say not as I do. With my sore throat still hanging around I attended Greek volleyball match anyway and knowingly screamed my lungs off. Right as I thought I was getting better I made it way worse.
  6. Do what you need to do. You know your body best. Everyone will tell you to drink tea, take it easy, sleep it off. Even I am telling you what to do. I find that the most important thing is to do what you are comfortable with. For myself, I still did workouts because Greek sing was coming up and I needed to practice. What I found was I felt amazing while working and getting my heart up, but the moment I stopped I felt horrible again.

Try to avoid sickness as best you can. Especially if you are in the dorms. Prepare for sickness because it can come from nowhere and try your best to not spread your illness.

  2. I am truly blessed to have not been sick at school yet. I will definitely keep these tips in mind in the case that I do become sick (because I am sure it is bound to happen sooner or later). I pretty good about keeping our room clean and disinfecting regularly to help keep us healthy. Thanks for sharing! These will definitely come in handy!

  3. I feel like I have been getting sick so much! I have terrible allergies and with Spring coming in, my allergies have been going crazy! I am constantly picking up tissues on the floor! Being sick in college is the worst because you don't have your mom to take care of you and have to get up and get moving yourself. I think by cleaning and disinfecting your room, you will be able to get healthier faster and not cause any more problems! A dirty room always makes me feel worse than I already would.

  4. I get sick at school about once a semester. It usually happens when the weather changes. But I do agree that the health center is the best place to go if you are sick at Northern. They will tell you what to do to get better.
