5 Tips for Maintaining Instagram

A few blog posts ago I gave some tips about starting an Instagram. Now I will follow that up with 5 tips on maintaining your Instagram.
  1. Grow your followers
    • Start by adding people. You cannot expect someone to follow your account if you do not follow theirs. Add people in your industry. For example, I talked about the new Instagram for the American Marketing Association on campus a few weeks ago, I started following other campus’ clubs as well as clubs on our campus.
  2. Once you have followers interact with them
    • Like and comment on their posts. Soon enough they will respond to your posts as well. Send them direct messages of things you find relevant to their account. You can even team up to promote each other’s account so your followers find the other account.
  3. Use your story
    • Especially if you are doing something like an event. You can go live or post as a story. This is great for multiple posts about the same subject. I will be using this while in New Orleans to do quick posts and updates.
  4. Have good pictures
    • Your viewers are not going to like your posts if they cannot tell what it is about. Having a high-quality camera helps. Most phones today have a great camera especially the iPhone 7. I have use pictures from that on the American Marketing Association’s Instagram page and they did not even need a filter.
  5.  Do not spam
    • Nothing is worse than getting on your Instagram and having the same account post a bunch of pictures in a row. I have been known to unfollow people who do that. Use a picture stitch app like Layout or use the new option that formats multiple pictures into a slide show.

Post regularly on your account. Link it to your other account to try and gain followers. Stay relevant to your market segment. Even tell people in person to go follow you on all forms of social media. Get the word out and keep to it!
